Mary MacKillop co-founded the first  Australian Religious Congregation, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, in 1866.

The “Brown Joeys” or ‘Josephites’, as they became known, began work in a converted stable, providing free education to all children, and opened many other ministries. Mary was known for her intelligence, leadership, passion, resilience and autonomous spirit – and her holiness. In 1909, Cardinal Moran stated, “Today, I believe that I have assisted at the death bed of a saint.”  He was right! Mary, was canonised as Australia’s first official saint, on 17 October  2010.  Her a legacy can inspire us all!
